Blue Butterflies with a woodblock, copyright Paula Kuitenbrouwer

I’ve elongated the woodblock for the composition of the drawing

All the male Common Blues (Polyommatus icarus), with their iridescent lilac blue colours, are light-blue. All the females are brown. They need to be brown to provide them with camouflage during the time they lay their eggs. The female in the middle on the woodblock has just laid her eggs. The slug-like caterpillar of the Blues is already looking for food and crawls over the block. Blues are common in Europe. It is always a delight to see them.

I’ve drawn two types of textures: the fragile butterfly texture and the solid wood texture. Combining opposing textures -fragile and solid- provides the drawing with balance.
